Mt. Kenya Lenana Peak Summit Challenge

Embark on an exhilarating adventure to conquer 2nd tallest mountain in Africa and tallest in Kenya, Mount Kenya via the Sirimon Route, renowned for its stunning scenery and diverse landscapes. Starting from the Sirimon Gate, this route offers a gradual ascent, making it accessible yet challenging for trekkers of varying skill levels. As you journey through lush montane forests, you’ll be greeted by the calls of exotic birds and the sight of colobus monkeys leaping through the canopy. Emerging from the forest, the trail leads you into the dramatic moorlands, dotted with giant lobelias and synecious that stand as silent sentinels against the backdrop of rugged peaks.

There will be 3 Prep Hikes that you can join in preparation for the mountain challenge:

  • Mt. Satima – 6th July
  • Rurimeria Hill – 13th July
  • Elephant Hill – 20th July

ITINERARY

DAY 1

Nairobi – Chogoria Park Gate ( 2,950m ) – Lake Ellis ( 3,450m ).

Leave from hotel/residence early morning and drive via the great northern road passing rice plantations and eastern highlands arriving Chogoria town in 4 hours.

It is from this town you will meet the rest of your climbing crew (porters and guides) and proceed with the driving through rain forest for about 1 hour.

Check in the park, have lunch and all the formalities involved ( note that the park entrance fees are only payable via Mpesa or credit card).

The trekking starts at Chogoria park gate through rush forests via Nithi waterfalls proceeding to lake Ellis. Dinner and overnight at your campsite.

DAY 2

Lake Ellis – Mintos camp 4200 m asl

After having breakfast, leave the camp trekking along a single trail through alpine and moorland vegetation.

Lunch will have been packed for you.

Dinner and night at your campsite and enjoy a magical sunset view from the camp

DAY 3

Mintos camp – Summit attempt (Lenana peak) – Shipton camp (3,300m) – Old mosses – Nairobi

Wake up at 0230 hours, have a simple breakfast and hit the trail in the dark for the summit catching up with sunrise on time at the summit.

This is the most breathtaking moment and unforgettable experience of all. If the weather
is very clear, Me Kilimanjaro is visible from this point.

After taking some photos start descending via Sirimon 9oute up to Shipton’s Camp (4,200m for full breakfast at the foot of the mountain then head on our way to Old mosses camp.

We leave the camp trekking down along the Mackinders valley to Met station camp (3,300 m) and spend the night at camp after a successful summit.

DAY 4

Old Moses Camp (3300m asl) -Sirimon Gate (2650m asl)

After Breakfast, we begin our descent to the gate ready for pickup.

Bid goodbye to the support crew of guides, cook and porters and give appreciations (tipping) and then drive back to Nairobi.

WHAT TO CARRY

Clothes:

  • Hiking pants (2 pairs water-resistant, 1 pair waterproof)
  • Waterproof hiking boots
  • Woolen hiking socks (6 pairs)
  • Leg gaiters
  • Thermal pants (2 pairs, medium or heavy-duty, breathable)
  • Woolen or polyester underwear (briefs)
  • Thermal t-shirt (4, long sleeve)
  • Polyester t-shirts (4)
  • Fleece jacket
  • Down jacket
  • Waterproof jacket/shell jacket/poncho
  • Fleece hat + wide-brimmed hat
  • A scarf or tubular bandana or regular bandana
  • Waterproof gloves (summit gloves and fleece gloves)

Camping Gear:

  • Hiking backpack (25l or 30l daypack, and a 60L backpack for your porter)
  • Warm Sleeping bag (four seasons/-5 degrees comfort recommended)
  • Headlamp and extra batteries
  • Hot water bottle

Accessories:

  • Snacks
  • Thermal flask
  • Hydration bladder/water bottle
  • Personal items (phone and charger, camera, ID, pocket money, hand sanitizer, facemask, lighter, pocket knife, whistle, basic first aid kit)
  • Trekking poles
  • Sunglasses + sunscreen
  • Toiletries (wet wipes, dry wipes, toothbrush, toothpaste, petroleum jelly)
